WELCOME TO OUR HEALTHY HOME
The ideas behind the design of the home
- keep all the influences of conservation, ecology and the environment in balance
- to incorporate as many healthy materials and features as possible by eliminating modern building practices which often exclude fresh air from the home and expose the inhabitant to toxic gases, chemical based finishes and harmful plastic products
- to be energy efficient / solar passive
Constructed of rammed earth and rough sawn celery top pine, which are painted with natural paints and lime washes allowing them to continue to breath and regulate the temperature and humidity of the internal atmosphere.
The structure of the house is wooden therefore minimizing electromagnetic fields.
A north facing sunroom (or suntrap), makes a great area for growing tomatoes and herbs, also is an element to heating of the home. A "Trombe wall" warms the garden bed soil, which lengthens the growing season. Old terracotta pipes (which do not ionize the air) are used to transfer the heat from the sunroom to the main house.
Offering a great aspect for the potential of installing solar ponds, to maximise free energy from the sun. The home has been designed so that the eaves permit the winter sun while excluding the summer sun, and the majority of the windows have been double glassed.
The home has been featured in the following articles:
The Sunday Tasmanian 4 March 2001 "Bush Medicine for the Home".
Owner Builder Magazine February/March 2001 "The Health Home".
THE HOME ITSELF
"Attractive, Functional & Healthy"
Even before entering the home you feel a warmth - a feeling of relaxation and uniqueness, and when entering you reallise just how special it is. Second hand timbers, recycled hardwood and King Billy pine are featured through out the home and a slate floor welcomes you and guides you through to the main living areas. The dining room is set in an atrium window which takes full advantage of the majestic outlook. The lounge off to the right is a comfortable area where the wood heater is located. It also opens out to a deck, ideal for sipping tea and relaxation. The lounge also has a sun window in the roof, perfect for drying clothes, and also can be closed off in summer time. The lounge room also steps out to the sunroom (suntrap) where you can grow your own herbs and tomatoes.
Back across the other side of the house the kitchen offers a mix of wooden features along with a marble slab in the bench top and a bay window. The main bedroom at the front of the house has access via a glass door to outside. The lower level has another room which is currently used as a store room. This could easily be lined and made into the fourth bedroom. The bathroom is combined with the laundry and features the bath in a atrium window so you can soak while being surrounded by the wilderness. Heading upstairs there is a large second living room which would also be ideal for a teenagers retreat, with two bedrooms off.
THE LAND SURROUNDING
The pleasant mix of foliage surrounding the house complement its design. With established trees as well as dry sclerophyll forest, a perfect wood supply.
A mud oven provides a warm area to gather and entertain whilst cooking wood fired meals.
A medium dam is located closer to the front boundary and a cubbie/sleep out will keep the children entertained.
There are two storage sheds, one being a medium garden shed and then another large shed sectioned into three areas.
There is a chook shed and ample potential for a veggie garden.
Down the side of the boundary a creek bed runs where in the wet seasons you can enjoy the soothing gurgles and animals it brings.
